Sharing the use of Microsoft tools in the classroom at local gatherings of teachers...

Submitted by Fiona Beal
On Thursday 25th February Keshma Patel from Micklefield Primary, one of Microsoft's local MIEExperts who is in fact representing South Africa at the Microsoft E2 Global event next week, invited me to present on the topic of ‘How teachers around South Africa are using Microsoft's newer ICT tools in the classroom’. This termly gathering, which Keshma initiated last year, is for Grade 6 teachers from local schools to share classroom ideas with one another. The theme for this session was ‘Using technology effectively in the classroom’. I have embedded my PowerPoint presentation from the free Microsoft OneDrive below share it in case anyone would like to view some of the links. I am embedding the PowerPoint from OneDrive below as well. One Drive is a great tool for sharing Microsoft documents online.

Usually 20-25 teachers from surrounding schools in Rondebosch, attend these sessions. I presented first as the guest speaker, and then Keshma showed us her impressive use of technology in her BYOD (Bring your own device) project-based learning Grade 6 class of girls.

The last part of the session was very useful as well because Keshma demonstrated how to plan a project using the correct pedagogical approach. In this approach you decide on your project and what you want to achieve. The selection of technology tools only happens after that when you decide which tools best fit the task. We discussed the type of tools teachers could use effectively in a project.

Then Keshma got us to break into groups according to our Grades to plan a project together while she rotated from group to group offering suggestions. She invited the teachers to email her about any future projects they are planning for next term if they needed ideas about the type of technology tools that would best fit into their projects.

This fruitful gathering ended at 4:40 pm.
